Creating Impactful Stories with Biffa

At Signal, we’re passionate about crafting stories that not only entertain but also educate and inspire change. Our recent project, in collaboration with We Are Brass Tacks, is a testament to this. Together, we produced a compelling series of HSE films for UK waste management giant, Biffa. This project showcased our ability to combine storytelling with critical safety messaging to create a positive impact within the organisation.

Recognising the Need for Effective HSE Videos

Biffa, a leader in waste management services, recognised the strategic benefit of producing effective HSE videos. They approached We Are Brass Tacks to produce a second season of films that would resonate with their workforce. The goal was to enhance safety awareness, empower supervisors, and foster a culture of well-being.

Our collaborative journey began with a shared vision: to develop engaging narratives that would effectively communicate important safety protocols and procedures. Our aim was to create impactful videos that would not only educate but also inspire positive behavioural changes.

Crafting Authentic Films

The films were set across a range of sites around Birmingham. The urban landscape provided the perfect backdrop for the narratives. Professional actors stepped into the shoes of Biffa supervisors to bring authenticity to the screen. This attention to detail ensured that the films resonated with Biffa’s workforce, making the safety messages more relatable and impactful.

The result was four educational and engaging films that are included in Biffa’s national Health & Safety campaign. Each film portrays a gripping scenario: from a supervisor assessing risks during waste collection to emphasising the importance of vigilance and quick decision-making. The narratives underscore the significance of both physical safety and mental well-being, stressing the importance of stress management and self-care for supervisors.

Embracing the Lessons

Biffa’s workforce embraced the films, incorporating lessons learned into their daily routines. Their dedication to safety and creativity resonated with viewers. Using drama-based scenarios, the films highlight the power of storytelling in promoting people’s safety and well-being. This innovative approach helped reinforce the critical messages in a memorable and engaging way.
