A Right Royal Reveal

After ten years of planning and construction, we were proud to be asked to record the official inauguration of Port of Aberdeen’s new South Harbour. It also marked the end of a long and rewarding project for the Signal team – we have been working alongside the Port of Aberdeen team to film progress on the project since 2018.

The inauguration event was held in a large marquee on the quayside. Inside there was champagne, cupcakes and a large LED video screen which formed the backdrop to speeches and entertainments.

Outside, a pipe band and a unit of sea cadets formed an honour guard to welcome HRH Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, who attended to officially opened the £420 million South Harbour.

As well as capturing this event on camera, we also produced four videos which played on the large LED wall – “Big Stuff”, “Time”, “Heroes” and “Loop”: “Big Stuff” used bold and dynamic text to illustrate the key facts and figures about the construction, from the thousands of tonnes of concrete required to the size of the new deep water berths; “Time” used time-lapse footage, from multiple cameras, recorded over several years, to show the changes at the Harbour as construction progressed; “Heroes” celebrated the teams that worked tirelessly to complete this project, capturing the comradery, joy and laughter;  “Loop” was a ten-minute compilation of cinematic footage filmed over 5 years, that formed a constant gently moving backdrop to the event.

The Princess Royal took time to meet members of the Project team and their families, and also admired a huge accropode which had been installed in the marquee, and painted by a local artist, to represent the 9,000 accropodes that went into the Harbour’s sea defences.

Speeches were made by the local politicians and Port of Aberdeen CEO, Bob Sanguinetti, who also helped the Princess Royal reveal a plaque marking this momentous achievement.

The South Harbour project is impressive and Team Signal are delighted and proud to have captured so much of the project. Our film crews were there across all the seasons, in all kinds of weather. We were there to capture the first vessel berthing, the Tall Ships arrival, VIP tours, the First Minister’s visit, and many more events. In that time we have produced over 25 films for the Port.
