Our goal at Signal is always to tell stories that matter. We specialise in telling complex stories with clarity, creativity and authenticity. We recently completed an inspiring series of new marketing films for Aberdeen City Council showcasing the Union Street CARS (Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme). This ambitious initiative has breathed new life into some of Aberdeen’s most historic buildings across the city centre. By offering grants for repairs, supporting the reuse of heritage buildings, and promoting traditional building skills, the CARS scheme is helping protect Aberdeen’s architectural identity for future generations.

Like every Signal video production, this film was built on careful planning and thoughtful storytelling. Our team carried out in-depth interviews with multiple contributors across several locations, capturing footage of the buildings that benefited from the scheme. Coordination was key; we worked around busy schedules to ensure contributors could take part without stepping away from their businesses for long, while still gathering all the essential footage we needed.
Shooting on Aberdeen’s most famous Street came with its own set of challenges. From unpredictable Scottish weather to the constant flow of pedestrians, cyclists, and traffic, every shot required precision and adaptability. To keep things running smoothly, we travelled light, using only essential camera equipment. This kept set-up times short and gave us the flexibility to make the most of our time at each location.

For aerial footage, we scheduled our 4k drone filming early in the morning, capturing stunning views of Union Street while the city was still relatively quiet. These shots became a powerful way to highlight the character and charm of Aberdeen’s historic centre, and the sheers scale of CARS.
We worked closely with the client throughout the project, to ensure the script, graphics, and pacing reflected the scope and impact of the CARS scheme. Clear communication throughout the edit ensured every detail was accurate and aligned with the story the council wanted to tell.
We also created a set of shorter promotional films for use on social channels. The result is a captivating suite of films that showcase both the transformative benefits of the CARS programme and the timeless architecture of Union Street. Both the films and the CARS project have been successful, with the council securing funding to extend conservation work to other parts of the city centre. We’re proud to support local initiatives and working with Aberdeen City Council in conserving the city’s heritage and supporting the local economy.
We’ve been working with Aberdeen City Council for many years, you can see more of those projects here.
