Aberdeen film company Signal braved the scorching heat of Summer in the Gulf of Mexico, to create a marketing film for drilling company Noble promoting their Globetrotter Class Vessels.
The Globetrotters are uniquely versatile mobile drilling vessels and, as their name suggests, they travel all over the world. So, Signal’s film crew had to make a trip from Scotland to New Orleans, then a vessel across the Gulf of Mexico to board ‘Globetrotter II’ which was being upgraded between campaigns.

They filmed the vessel as it ran through a series of unique operations and captured interviews with some of the crew who work on board. This would have been a fairly standard film shoot for Signal, who have three decade’s experience filming offshore, but it had some un-standard challenges…
Cameraman Greg Thom said “After a long-haul flight, we drove from New Orleans to Port Fouchon to take a boat to the drillship. Once we arrived, we transferred between vessels in a Billy Pugh. It was an exciting challenge to deal with jetlag, seasickness, and being hoisted on a line between two ships, which was a first for me”

But the challenges didn’t end there: “It was very hot. Working in the intense temperatures, wearing full PPE, while carrying heavy cameras made it more interesting! Thankfully, we got some quality time for R&R at the end of the trip to explore New Orleans and sample the local culture”.

But the team persevered, and the completed film is now in use by Noble, to promote the Globetrotters’ unique capabilities. Schuyler Dugle, Noble’s Senior Communication Specialist had this to say “This kind of work requires a specialised skillset. Signal are highly experienced filming internationally, and offshore, and we needed that experience to showcase the unique capabilities of our vessel.”
This not the first film Signal have produced films for Noble. Last year they made ‘NORMS’, a film promoting Noble’s brand-new Houston-based Noble Operational Risk Management Support centre and have made films for two of their jack-up rigs, Noble Innovator and Noble Intrepid.
Signal have six further Globetrotter technical films in post-production, all using the footage that the team gathered on their trip to the Gulf of Mexico. These films have a technical focus and are aimed at the engineering teams of prospective customers. Signal also captured footage for an imminent series of recruitment films, to help promote the opportunities available at Noble for crews working offshore. We’re very grateful to Noble for trusting us to deliver for them.
